Laws Affecting Individuals with Disabilities:


Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Federal law ensuring that children with disabilities receive a free appropriate education designed to meet their individual needs in the least restrictive environment.


Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Federal law that prohibits discrimination based on disability by entities receiving federal funding including public schools.  Under this federal law, a student may be eligible for services if his or her disorder limits the ability to attend school or participate in school activities, even if the impairment does not impact the ability to learn.


Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and

Americans with Disabilities Amendment Act (ADAAA)

Federal civil rights law which guarantees individuals with disabilities equal opportunity in employment, public accommodations, state and local government services, transportation, and telecommunications.


New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD)

New Jersey state law which prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, places of public accommodation, credit and business contracts on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, nationality, ancestry, age, sex, familial status, marital status, domestic partnership status, affectional or sexual orientation, atypical cellular or blood trait, genetic information, liability for military service, mental or physical disability, perceived disability, or AIDS and HIV status.
